I Want a Referendum- do you
If you are concerned about the way labour are treating this country and selling it out to Europe without our approval the article below will be of interest to you.
I Want a Referendum, a new cross-party campaign set up to push for a vote on the revised EU Constitution, launched yesterday. Already over 3000 people have signed up to support the campaign through their new website.
The Government promised a referendum on the original version of the EU Constitutional Treaty, and was elected on this manifesto commitment. Now Gordon Brown intends to go back on his word by denying people a vote on the new version of the Treaty. I Want a Referendum needs your help to make him keep his promise.
If adopted, the Constitutional Treaty would mean that in future new powers could be transferred to the EU without the need for any more new treaties. Further powers could be simply transferred gradually to the EU, with no public debate. In other words - this could be our last ever chance to have a say on the future of the EU. We must not miss it.
There is not much time: Gordon Brown wants to force the Constitution through Parliament in early 2008

The campaign will also be launching a new cinema advert later this month making the case for a referendum. In its initial phase the advert will be seen by one million people.

As many of you are aware there is currently an application in to build 70 houses on land adjacent to
Thornton cemetery. As your local councillor I felt that I should outline the situation to enable you to understand the circumstances. The main part of the site has been housing land since at least 1998 before any of us were on Council, when we had a Labour controlled Council, and has been through 2 public enquiries. We cannot stop any housing on this site but we can work to get the best arrangement of housing.
The majority of the site is allocated on the Unitary Development Plan (UDP) as a phase one housing site. That is one that, subject to planning consent, is available now for development to meet housing needs in the district. Below is an extract from the UDP:- Adopted October 2005 REPLACEMENT UNITARY DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR THE BRADFORD DISTRICT
Bradford west. BW/H1.15 CLOSE HEAD LANE, THORNTON 1.79 ha Revised site, extended to include additional vacant land further north. Part of the site has planning approval and therefore the whole site has phase 1 status, in order to ensure that it is developed comprehensively, developers should explore the redevelopment of the derelict water treatment building within the site and retain trees, which shield the site from view from Thornton Road. Cottage style housing is the most appropriate at the northern end of the site. The remaining portion of the site to the SE of the cemetery access road is unallocated land. The outline planning application that has been recently submitted reflects the sensitive nature of this land being the approach to the cemetery and in close proximity to the War Memorial. The application shows an indicative housing layout which has the land immediately to the east of no 800 being developed for housing (this land has had residential planning permission in the past but it has now lapsed) but where the land meets the cemetery boundary it is used for an underground water storage tank for the development and would be laid out as Public Open Space. As a condition of the sale the Council has required prospective purchasers to carry out certain works to the cemetery in accordance with discussions that have been had with Cemeteries over a long period of time. Briefly these include:- a. The replacement/relocation of the existing dilapidated workman’s hut. b. Reciting and refurbishment of the main gatesc. New boundary fencingd. Patching/resurfacing of some cemetery footpaths.e. Pointing to no
800 Thornton Road
. It is acknowledged that this is a very sensitive area to build houses on and one that should in my opinion see a reduction from 70 to a maximum of 40.
The natural environment should be protected but more importantly the feelings of those that have loved ones within the cemetery should be considered. It has been in the local press that the council sees part of the cemetery as surplus to requirements. I do wonder how the cemetery access road can be surplus to requirements. It has to be accepted that the land is to be turned into housing as previously stated it has been designated for housing since the Labour run council of the 90’s,

Welcome to the crazy world of local politics. I decided to set up a site to give the residents of Thornton and Allerton ward the opportunity to have another way of being able to be kept in touch with what is going on in our area.
I will aim to keep the site updated on a regular basis with local issues and what we are achieveing in our area. There will be the occassional rant about national issues and how they affect us here.
I hope you find the site useful and I look forward to receiving comments in the future.
